Served from magnum no less, the ’72 Chambertin encapsulated everything that is heavenly about mature Burgundy Pinot Noir. It had a healthy deep color with just a little bricking on the rim. The bouquet is so fresh and defined with seductive aromas of strawberry preserve interlaced with crushed stone, orange blossom and a touch of quince. You could just sit there and admire the aromatics forever. The palate is exquisitely balanced with perfectly judged acidity, fine tannins and a youthful effervescent core of pretty red fruit that completely belies its 41 years of age (due to provenance and format). There is just a sense of joy about the Chambertin, unpretentious and so drinkable, the drop of soy on the finish just adding to the frisson. One of the best wines I have tasted from this great estate. Tasted May 2013.
