Piaggia’s 2006 Carmignano Il Sasso is dense, rich and full-bodied in its dark fruit, smokiness, licorice and new leather. This sensual, round wine possesses gorgeous balance and tons of style, with more than enough freshness to continue to drink well for a number of years. It is not to be missed. Il Sasso is 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet and 10% Merlot. The wine was aged in French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.
Late harvests, low yields, lengthy macerations and no fining/filtration are the rule at Piaggia. These new releases from proprietor Mauro Vannucci show exceptional balance, and his 2006s are the best wines I have ever tasted from the estate.
