I purchased a half case of this wine and had five marvelous bottles, but the last bottle, tasted in 1979, had faded badly. However, in the late-1980s, two bottles tasted in Bordeaux were excellent, nearly outstanding examples of what was always considered a top vintage for Pape-Clement. If this wine has been well stored it should still reveal a big, smoky, roasted, truffle-and-berry-scented bouquet, relatively fat, alcoholic flavors, and a long, lush finish. Look for this wine in larger formats at auctions because it is clearly one of the sleepers of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now-may be in decline. Last tasted, 3/88.
