The 2012 Orvieto Classico Superiore Castagnolo represents a blend of Grechetto (60%), Trebbiano Procanico, Chardonnay and Riesling Renano. Bernardo Barberani calls it “his most modern interpretation of a traditional wine.” Castagnolo opens with a bright, luminous appearance and easy tones of citrus, green melon and stone fruit. There’s a fragrant touch of white flower backed by a much-needed spot of acidity that keeps the palate refreshed. This is a dry, or “secco,” rendition. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2014.
The Lago di Corbara area of Umbria represents one of the most unique and fascinating microclimates in Italy. Early morning lake fog creates the idea conditions for muffa nobile (botrytis cinerea) that is the secret behind the stunning dessert wines of this estate.
