This fine winery has an enviable track record. Nothing that emerges from Matanzas Creek is less than excellent, with their Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Merlot among the finest California can produce. Matanzas Creek's Chardonnay is always 100% barrel-fermented, put through a 100% malolactic fermentation, and is given considerable aging on its lees. The 1993 and 1994 Chardonnays are smooth, complex, powerful, well-balanced wines revealing admirable new oak, as well as plenty of buttery, apple/tangerine/citrusy fruit, fine ripeness, adequate acidity, and medium to full-bodied, long finishes. Although not the biggest or most muscular of California Chardonnays, they are flavorful, well-balanced wines for consuming within 2-4 years of the vintage. Tel. (707) 528-6464; Fax (707) 571-0156
