Ojai produced two outstanding Viogniers. The dryer wine, the 1996 Viognier Roll Ranch, exhibits a honeysuckle and apricot-scented nose, medium to full body, crisp, underlying acidity that keeps the wine from tasting flabby and out of focus, and a long, heady finish. I would opt for drinking it over the next 12-18 months. The Ojai Vineyard has been producing excellent to outstanding wines over recent years, and they seem intent on climbing to the top of California's qualitative pyramid. Their new releases are - at the minimum - distinctive, delicious, and impressive.
