Tasted at the Chambolle Amoureuses vertical in London, the 1964 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses was nothing short of sensational despite being a little turbid. It certainly looked its age with its wide tawny rim. One bottle was passed its best so a second bottle was opened. Here there were sensory fireworks. The nose is exuberant and still quite rich with mulberry, black truffle, morels and woodland aromas that are almost moving in their complexity. The palate is very harmonious and cohesive with cedar and leather notes infusing the red fruit. There is impressive weight and breadth here, the bravura finish tamed by its age, but still delivering the goods. Provenance obviously plays a key here, but a great bottle will give immense pleasure. Tasted November 2015.
