Caparzo has turned out a beautiful 2001 Brunello di Montalcino. Medium ruby in color, it is a delicate, understated wine with classic Sangiovese nuances of cherries, tobacco and underbrush on a medium-bodied frame. It shows excellent persistence and a very attractive perfumed quality on the palate along with firm tannins and a long, fresh finish. A year or two of cellaring will be beneficial, but with some aeration this is a delicious wine to enjoy today. Tasted again two days after opening, the tannins had softened significantly and it was quite lovely. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.
