Tasted at the Chateau Figeac vertical at the property. The 1949 Chateau Figeac was the late Thierry Manoncourt's favorite vintage, according to the family. As luck would have it, the first bottle tasted was distinctly off color. Fortunately, a second was off the charts. It has a very complex, profound bouquet with scents of blood orange, Manuka honey, cigar box and a hint of Chinese tea. Whereas the 1950 leans over to the Left Bank, this is more Right Bank in style. The palate is medium-bodied with an absolutely stunning balance and poise. There is something so natural and effortless about this Figeac, virtues of this fabulous post-war vintage. This is a bottle that frankly was difficult to find fault with, a heavenly Saint Emilion. Tasted June 2015.
