Ravenwood's 1989s were the lightest wines I have ever tasted from this top flight producer of California wines. While acceptable, none except the Merlot merited a rating above 84 points, undoubtedly reflecting the difficulties posed by the 1989 vintage. The best 1989 I tasted from Ravenswood was the 1989 Merlot-Sangiacomo. With a super nose of mocha, herb-scented, berry fruit and spices, it reveals excellent richness and ripeness in the mouth, as well as good length, moderate tannins, and a fine, well-balanced, concentrated finish. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
