Perhaps the most persuasive example of Storybook Mountain Zinfandel's ability to improve with age is the 1980 Reserve, the debut release. This wine has evolved brilliantly, and now offers a sensational bouquet of wet stones, red and black fruits, earth, and spices. In the mouth, there is great depth and richness, yet considerable structure remains. At age 12, the wine is still an infant in terms of its evolution. With heaps of fruit and gobs of life left, it is amazingly impressive for a 12-year old Zinfandel. Do not be surprised to see it last for another 20-25 years!I have become increasingly convinced that Storybook Mountain Vineyard's Zinfandels are not only the longest-lived in California, but are also wines that clearly reveal more personality and character after 5-6 years of age. They provide considerable ammunition for the argument that California Zinfandels can age well and improve.
