The 1984 Reserve, which is more open, with less flavor dimension and complexity than the more backward 1985 Reserve, is more flattering to taste. Plummy, rich, raspberry fruitiness, noticeable tannins, a round, generous texture, and a long, lush finish are in evidence. While it is drinkable now, and seemingly closer to full maturity, it should easily last for another decade. I have become increasingly convinced that Storybook Mountain Vineyard's Zinfandels are not only the longest-lived in California, but are also wines that clearly reveal more personality and character after 5-6 years of age. They provide considerable ammunition for the argument that California Zinfandels can age well and improve.
