The 1985 Reserve is showing much more personality and character than it did when it was released. Still amazingly young, with a dense, dark, ruby/purple color, the nose is just beginning to open and blossom, revealing scents of black raspberries and minerals. In the mouth, there is great fruit intensity, plenty of tannin, and a spicy, long, full-bodied, chewy finish. Believe it or not, I would cellar this wine for another 3-4 years and expect it to soar into the next century in impeccable condition. I have become increasingly convinced that Storybook Mountain Vineyard's Zinfandels are not only the longest-lived in California, but are also wines that clearly reveal more personality and character after 5-6 years of age. They provide considerable ammunition for the argument that California Zinfandels can age well and improve.
