The 1994 Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard (125 cases) must be Ken Wright's effort to produce a wine with some of the smoky, meaty, Asian spice elements of a top-notch Morey-St.-Denis or Gevrey-Chambertin grand cru. The wine exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, a heady, fragrant, in-your-face bouquet, rich, full-bodied flavors, exceptional purity, low acidity, a velvety smooth texture, and a yummy finish. This hedonistic Pinot Noir should drink well for 5-7 years.
Ken Wright, who was long associated with the fine wines made at McMinnville's Panther Creek, has formed a winery under his own name. The results in 1994 are superb. There are not many Pinot Noir winemakers who can make six separate cuvees, and have five of them nearly outstanding. In fact, this exceptional success rate puts Ken Wright in the company of such Burgundy luminaries as Laurent Ponsot, Lalou Bize-Leroy, Hubert Lignier, J. J. Confuron, and Claude Dugat. Although quantities of the top wines are extremely limited, Wright's sumptuous Pinot Noirs are worth an effort to track down.
Kudos to Ken Wright for this marvelous array of Pinot Noirs.
