The 2016 Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore Riserva opens slowly in the glass, youthfully inward and darkly intense. Coaxing brings forward black currant, ashen stone and sweet smoke nuances. This washes across the palate, surprisingly juicy and fresh. Mentholated herbs complement crisp black cherry and sour citrus. Sneaky tannins emerge through the finish, crystalline in nature, as a bump of residual acidity maintains unprecedented freshness. Licorice and liquid stone notes linger. The 2016 remains incredibly primary yet concentrated and complex. It will be years before this mellows, yet I certainly hope to be able to revisit a bottle when it does. This is a gorgeous wine in the making.
