The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Banale is virtually at the same level as the 1997 (one of the top two or three wines of the appellation in that vintage). A somber, saturated ruby, its aromas are fuller, ampler, and more weighty than the regular bottling as well as sweeter and spicier. Rich, sensual, and caressing on the palate, powerful, focused, and long, its drive and amplitude are particularly felt on the very long finish. Drink: 2005-2018. High level winemaking here.
This small Montalcino property is part of a large Italian insurance company, with the largest part of the wine operation being the Fattoria del Cerro in Montepulciano. The vineyards, well located near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, produced good wines for a decade, but in 1997, largely due to the exceptional work of winemaker Lorenzo Landi, quality took a startling leap.
