The 2015 Contraste Branco is an increasingly fine value in Douro. A field blend, it was aged for eight months in stainless steel tanks (70%) and used French oak barrels (30%). Although seen only a few weeks after bottling, this was already in pretty good form--but I suspect it will get even better in time. Showing very fine acidity, it has about as much as the Estate white on paper. However, its balance and concentration level are different; thus, this has an even livelier and even fresher feel. This elegant Branco is on the lighter side, but the purity of the fruit and all that zing and zest on the finish make this more interesting and more persistent the longer it sits in the mouth. As it warms in the glass, it keeps improving. Overall, the big finish here makes this downright impressive. I suspect this will eventually become notably superior to the wonderful 2014, but it needs a few more months in the bottle to pull together. It may be the best Contraste white yet produced, but to some extent it is about the potential just now. No matter what, it should be a fine value.
