The extremely saturated, opaque, dark ruby color of the 1988 Barolo-Le Gramolere is atypical for Barolo. The nose offers up funky, kinky, tar, mineral, and sweaty saddle leather aromas intertwined with super-ripe black fruit notes. There is tremendous ripeness, but a disjointed feel to this big wine. With such impressive extraction of flavor, this Barolo should prove to be outstanding provided one has the patience to wait 5-7 years. It is a controversial style of Barolo.
