Do not worry – I have plans to make an in-depth visit to Bierzo when I find the time and it is brilliant wines such as this that suggest the sooner the better. The 2009 Ulteia Saint Jacques has a very focused, mineral-laden nose with great delineation, vibrant red fruits, a touch of rose petal and crushed strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied with super-fine tannins, a gentle but insistent grip with charred blackberry and white pepper flavors reminiscent of a cool Syrah/Mourvedre from the Rhone. This is an outstanding wine, irrespective of its unbeatable price.
