The 2010 El Rocallis is produced with the unusual and unknown Incrocio Manzoni an Italian cross of Riesling and Pinot Blanc, which was planted in Can Rafols more than 25 years ago. The wine fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels where it aged for five months. The nose is a little backward with aromas of hay, nectarine, apple and hints of honey. The palate is fresh and lively, with a clean thread of acidity and very tasty flavors with a spicy, chalky feeling. It does not have the complexity and completeness of the Vinya La Calma, but it’s still a very noteworthy white from calcareous soils. Drink now-2018.
Can Rafols dels Caus is a spectacular property in the Garraf subzone of Penedes, a huge calcareous rock where owner Carlos Esteva grows an eclectic collection of red and white grapes and crafts highly personal wines.
