If you think a Chenin Blanc is unusual then what would you say if they tell you they have a white from Incrocio Manzoni? Incroncy-what? Yep, that's the 2011 El Rocallís, a small plot planted in chalky soils in the Garraf with this obscure Italian crossing of Riesling and Pinot Blanc that is 25 years old. 2011 feels ripper and more Mediterranean than 2010, combining notes of aromatic herbs with lime and peach. The palate is terribly tasty, with pungent flavors, more complex than just fruit, more about the soil and the landscape than anything else. These characterful whites are fermented in large French oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, but they are not about the élevage. This is superb. It will age nicely in bottle but you can pull the cork now if you want. 3,199 bottles produced.
