The 2006 Cabernet Franc Poggio de’ Colli flows with gorgeous layers of perfumed dark red fruit, grilled herbs, spices and new leather. This is an especially poised, elegant vintage for this wine. The Poggio de’ Colli was fermented in open-top wood vats, aged in new French oak and bottle without fining and/or filtration. It is a stellar effort. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2021.
Late harvests, low yields, lengthy macerations and no fining/filtration are the rule at Piaggia. These new releases from proprietor Mauro Vannucci show exceptional balance, and his 2006s are the best wines I have ever tasted from the estate.
