A 2006 Riesling Pfaffenberg Reserve labeled with the names of coats of arms of both Salomon and Metternich (whose vineyards in the Pfaffenberg the Salomons are now farming) is another very peachy, opulent expression of 2006 Riesling, with musky and pungent hints of over-ripeness and botrytis. Officially, this is halbtrocken. The saline, citric aspects of the “regular” Pfaffenberg are absent here and I wonder whether this will take on a bit more definition and clarity in the short run. At present, imposing though this wine is in its way, I would not recommend cellaring it. Erich Salomon succumbed to cancer last November (less than a week before Alois Kracher), but Berthold Salomon will continue the recent advances in quality at this estate as though his older brother were still looking on. Most of the harvest here took place in the second half of October.Importer: Terry Theise Estate Selections, imported by Michael Skurnik Wines, Inc., Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300
