The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli, from one of Montalcino’s most storied sites, is darker and firmer than the regular bottling. The fruit possesses lovely depth and roundness, along with suggestions of minerals, menthol and spices that add layers of complexity on the long, polished finish. This shows great purity and depth in its dark red fruit. A year or two in bottle should help the tannins soften a bit, but this, too, is best enjoyed relatively early. I loved the Montosoli for its overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.
This is a very convincing set of new releases from Altesino; only the 2008 Rosso is disappointing.
