Grimaldi’s 2007 Barolo Sotto Castello di Novello shows more freshness and minerality than the regular bottling, along with an expressive bouquet that is delicately woven throughout the fruit. High-toned floral notes add freshness and verve to the finish. This, too, is a fairly approachable Barolo although I find greater balance and symmetry than in the straight Barolo. The vines are only ten years old, which leads me to believe that over time the Castello will emerge as Grimaldi’s more important single-vineyard Barolo. The 2007 is beautiful. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.
Ferruccio Grimaldi’s 2007s showed beautifully, but they needed quite a bit of time to reveal their underlying subtlety and nuance.
