Readers seeking fine Chianti Classico should check out Castello di Ama's 1997 Chianti Classico. Made from a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 12% Merlot, and 8% Caniolo whose yields were 2.4 tons of fruit per acre, this dark ruby-colored Chianti possesses a pure style, outstanding ripeness, and spicy, cedary aromas and flavors intertwined with black raspberries, cigar box, and vanilla. Dense, medium-bodied, soft, and opulent, it will drink well for 7-8 years.
