I have opened two bottles of 1995 Pignan. It is quite backward, seemingly austere, but perplexing. The color is a healthy dark-ruby. The closed nose eventually gives up jammy cherry notes, smoke, and earth. Medium-bodied, unevolved, tannic, and rather compressed, this Pignan needs 2-3 years of bottle age. My instincts suggest there is more to this wine than I have been able to discern from tasting it. Time will tell. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2010.Importers: Martine's Wines, San Rafael, CA; tel.
