The 2007 Vigna Piancastelli is Pallagrello Nero and Casavecchia made in a slightly late-harvest style. This sumptuous racy wine bursts from the glass with heady notes of ash, scorched earth, game, wild cherries, sage and rosemary. Despite the wine’s size, everything is in wonderful harmony here. Today the Piancastelli is quite young, but it should develop beautifully in bottle over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.
The richness of Campanian oenology is still being discovered. These superb new releases from Terre del Principe are great starting points for readers who want to discover the virtues of Pallagrello Bianco, Pallagrello Nero and Casavecchia, all indigenous, native varieties that proprietor Peppe Mancini helped revive from near obscurity.
