Guigal produced an attractive 1992 Gigondas with good structure and tannin, as well as deep berry fruit tinged with aromas of olives, earth, herbs, and black-cherries. Medium-bodied, round, and spicy, this rustic Gigondas will not make consumers forget Guigal's outstanding 1990, but it is a fine effort for the vintage. The last previous great vintage for Guigal's Chateauneuf du Pape was 1990. He made a simple 1991 Chateauneuf du Pape, and decided not to make any Chateauneuf du Pape in 1992 and 1993, stating bluntly that there was nothing of quality. Marcel Guigal modestly claims that he learned all he knows about making red wine from his father, whom he states was a "genius" when it came to blending and understanding the purpose of a wine's upbringing (elevage) in the cellars. Anybody who can turn out 75,000 cases of a red Cotes du Rhone as delicious as Guigal consistently produces should merit attention. This wine was tasted between June 1 and June 16, 1996.Importer: Classic Wine Imports, Boston, MA; tel.
