Guigal's southern Rhone offerings that are coming on the market are slightly less successful than in the past, not only because the vintages have been more difficult, but also because it is getting harder to find top quality cuvees of wine that are not being estate-bottled. I enjoyed Guigal's 1994 Gigondas. It possesses abundant sweet cassis fruit, along with pepper, earth, black fruits, and licorice. It is an excellent, classic, medium to full-bodied Gigondas to drink over the next decade.Guigal is one of the cellars where the wines always taste better after they are bottled than they do from cask, although as the scores in this segment indicate, some profound wines can be found in the 1994, 1995, and 1996 vintages Chez Guigal.
