The Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2019 Barolo sees fruit from a large vineyard site in the Breri MGA with southern exposures and slightly lower elevations. It borders Monvigliero but only reaches 250 meters in elevation. It also shares the blue marl soils that distinguish this area. The wine offers pretty fruit intensity with ruby fruit, bright cherry and cassis. This vintage takes a little longer to open, and although it doesn't share the complexity of its neighboring cru, this is a fine expression from Verduno.

A classic beauty, the 2018 Barolo exhibits delicate aromas of wild cherry, lilac and dried orange peel. There are earthy sensations and licorice root that add to the gentle volume and silkiness of this pretty wine.

The Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2017 Barolo (showing some of the gold medals and awards won for past vintages in the artwork depicted on the front label) offers a traditional and time-honored approach to Nebbiolo. It draws its fruit from various sites in Verduno. This is a soft and pliant expression that produces a long and fine succession of wild cherry, blue flower, crushed stone and anise-like aromas. You might also notice some rusty iron or candied apricot. This is a solid Barolo (with 10,000 bottles released) that vaunts a classic and traditional personality despite the hot vintage.

The Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2016 Barolo moves away from the anise and asphalt that you get in most standard Boroli and moves toward more floral, mineral and ethereal tones. This is a beautiful wine with relatively short tannins, plus chalky nuances and a more approachable style. The wine offers cherry, licorice root, campfire ash and white pepper. There were 7,500 bottles produced.

This estate captures the very essence of Barolo from Verduno, that, to my palate, also shows a hint of wildness or maybe some exotic character. Winemaking at Comm. G.B. Burlotto is traditional, and for this reason, those territory-specific aromas are even more pronounced and easy to recognize. If you had to settle with one Barolo "base" (I know the producers hate this descriptor used for non-vineyard specific Barolo) for the rest of your life, the 2015 Barolo would definitely do the trick. The wine delivers intensity and grace, with pretty background detailing of spice, crushed stone and ash.
