Michele Satta's 2013 Bolgheri Superiore I Castagni is a savory and smokey interpretation from the Tuscan Coast. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Teroldego (aged in oak for 24 months). There is a sweet flavor of dark cherry or crème de cassis that does much to define the mouthfeel. Otherwise, you are also treated to leather, spice and dark tar. The wine feels robust at first but later reveals a mid-weight presentation with silky elegance.

The 2012 Bolgheri Superiore I Castagni is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Syrah and 10% Teroldego aged in oak for 24 months. Some 6,000 bottles are produced. This beautiful wine offers a careful and well-studied sense of balance with wild fruit and dried cheery that are contrasted against heavier notes of tar, leather and tobacco. Like all of Michele Satta's excellent wines, they are linked by a special level of textural finesse and silkiness that is so specific to this winemaker.
