From vines almost 50 years old in the parcels Falkenberg and Lay and picked at 105° Oechsle in the same go, like the Grosses Gew?chs, at the end of October, the 2022 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers a delicate and juicy-savory nose of ripe stone fruits, pink grapefruits, lemons and finely broken slate. Lush and delicate on the palate, with crystalline and saline acidity, this is a mouth-watering and juicy, wonderfully intense and aromatic Auslese from the JSU. It is gorgeous, but you should age it in you cellar for at least a decade. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.

Based on botrytized fruit (about 30%, the rest was healthy) with an average of 92° Oechsle, the 2021 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese opens with an intense but delicate bouquet of tropical fruits with brown sugar and finely broken slate and cocoa milk notes. Crystalline and saline on the palate and with razor-sharp but fine acidity, this is a just-ripe, filigreed but quite intense Auslese with a straight and tangy character. It is by far not as fine and delicate as I used to know it, but it's definitely a wine for hard core Riesling freaks that praise acidity and vintage character above everything else. 95 grams of residual sugar? The acidity doesn't just leave the sweetness, it bites it away. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.

The 2020 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is based on ripe and predominantly healthy fruit with 15% to 20% of botrytis berries that are pretty prominent on the nose that reveals stewed fruit aromas but is also somewhat volatile and lacks the precision and freshness of the finest Auslesen. Entirely fermented in stainless steel, this is a pretty dry and structured Auslese made to be aged for about a decade. This should be an excellent gastronomic wine to be served with several dishes yet no desserts. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 1621 in November 2021.

From the overripe and botrytized berries of the Sp?tlese selection, the 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is intense and concentrated on the nose, but due to the sulfuric notes, it is far from being as terroir-driven as the Sp?tlese or even the Kabinett. The fruit is concentrated yet piquant, fresh and elegant on the palate and pure, refined and subtle on the finish due to the crystalline acidity and finesse that represents the JSU. This is an excellent Sp?tlese that needs at least a decade to age to its full finesse. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.
