Although Usseglio enjoys a fine reputation for Chateauneuf du Pape, I have had little experience with his wines. I immensely admired Usseglio's 1990 red Chateauneuf du Pape, which is typical of the big, opulent, high alcohol, lusty style of wine that requires consumption in its first 7-8 years of life. The huge nose of jammy red and black fruits, roasted nuts, black olives, and spices is a real turn-on. In the mouth, there are gobs of sweet, succulent fruit, low acidity, at least 15% alcohol, and a gutsy, chewy, fiery finish. It is not a Chateauneuf du Pape for the timid, but it does provide immense satisfaction in an upfront, precocious manner. No known American importer.
