The 1994 Terre Brune, made primarily from old vines Carignan, is a surprisingly strong effort from a grape that can make good, but rarely excellent wines. The color is dark ruby, and the bouquet is filled with scents of earth, black fruits (primarily plums and cherries), and smoky, herbal notes. In the mouth, there is an exuberant rich fruitiness, a surprisingly good texture and mid-palate (unusual for Carignan), and a dense, full-bodied, powerful finish. Although not complex, it is a seriously endowed, impressively extracted wine to consume over the next 2-5 years.Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900
