The 2008 Le Sughere di Frassinello is 50% Sangioveto, 25% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is one of the more refined, elegant wines I have tasted from this emerging property in Gavorrano. Layers of ripe dark fruit emerge in a silky, refined style that is utterly irresistible. Mint, flowers and spices follow, adding further complexity, while a final burst of juiciness has the last say on the finish. This isn’t the biggest wine Rocca di Frassinello has made, but I am deeply impressed by the classiness and length of the regal finish. As always, I recommend the estate’s wines be opened at least 30 minutes in advance, which seems to help the aromatics of these wines find their center. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.
