A dark ruby/purple-colored wine with a layered texture, sweet, jammy red and black fruits, low acidity, and a long, lush finish; it should drink well for a decade

I could not find any redeeming qualities in this sinewy, thin, austere, high acid, ferociously tannic wine. As hard as I tried, I could not see any positive side to the manner in which this wine is going to develop. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2008.There is no question that this property will make a strong comeback given the fact that the new owner, the perfume and couture giant, Chanel, is intent on bringing Canon back to its former glory (look at what Chanel has done at Rauzan-Segla in the appellation of Margaux). That being said, this wine was unimpressive.

A difficult wine to figure out; I have tasted very good bottles and really poor ones. Here's a good one: Slightly coarse, but with good concentration. Very smoky and fruity, with hints of grilled meats and funky earth. Full- to medium-bodied and chunky, with chewy tannins and a long, fruity finish. Best after 2000. -JS
