The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli is not totally smooth sailing. The bouquet bear the marks, perhaps scars is a better word, of the intensely hot summer growing season. There is a sharp note on the close that resemble overripe fruit, dried raspberry and cherry cola. Perhaps the darkest, most concentrated fruit found its home in this Riserva? The effect is a bit overdone. There's a touch of stickiness and sweetness that takes away from the complexity of the wine's final flavors. That said, I did note that the wine does straighten itself out once it takes on air in the glass. But that first impression of overripeness is hard to shake. It ages in large oak casks for four years, so there is no need to age this wine further.
