The opaque purple-colored 1997 Amadis (2,000 cases from 100-year old vines and minuscule yields of 10 hectoliters per hectare) was aged ten months in 100% new French oak before being bottled unfiltered. A blend of 40% Grenache (from 90-100 year old vines), 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Carignan (also 90-100 year old vines), 10% Syrah, and 5% Merlot, it is a blockbuster Priorat with huge, concentrated black raspberry, cassis, and berry fruit intermixed with minerals, smoke, licorice, and toasty oak. This intense wine possesses a seamless, sweet, concentrated mid-palate as well as finish. It is a terrific Spanish red to drink over the next 10-12 years.
