Over the last several years I have been less impressed with the Gigondas from this domaine, which has always been one of the reference points for the wines of Gigondas. I am delighted to report that their 1990 looks to be the best wine since the early eighties. In fact, it may ultimately prove to be outstanding, perhaps the best Raspail since their glorious 1978. The saturated black/ruby/purple color suggests super-ripeness and high extraction of flavor. The nose offers up intense, roasted, mineral, cassis aromas intermingled with the scents of Provencal herbs. In the mouth, this wine reveals full-bodied, deep, concentrated flavors, excellent intensity and depth, as well as moderate tannins in the long finish. There is a sense of structure to go along with the lavish richness and intensity. This well-delineated Gigondas is one of the stars of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 1995-2007.
