The top cuvee, the 2001 “1780", is closed and tannic. While I suspect in 3-4 years it will be far superior to its less expensive sibling, at present it is not easy to evaluate. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Tempranillo, and 10% Grenache aged 14 months in new American oak, it, surprisingly, reminded me of a lower level Bordeaux Pauillac. Aromas of cedar, spice box, black currants, and a hint of white chocolate jump from the glass of this moderately tannic, medium-bodied, elegant, structured 2001. Give it 1-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 7-8.Importer: Eric Solomon, European Cellars, Charlotte, NC; tel. (704) 358-1565
