Tasted at the Denis Mortet Chambertin vertical. The 1985 Chambertin Grand Cru, one of the first produced after Charles Mortet commenced bottling his entire production, has aged remarkably well. Surprisingly deep in color, only its thin tawny rim betrays its 30 years of age. The bouquet is fragrant with smudged red berry fruit, singed leather, clove and orange blossom; later bay leaf aromas developing. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, a brisk line of acidity, attractive mandarin and molasses notes furnishing the finish that still has pleasure to give. While not the greatest 1985 Chambertin, this is aged with grace and retained terroir expression. Tasted January 2016.
