Rene Rostaing's 1991s offer persuasive evidence of just how impressive this vintage is in Cote Rotie. The 1991 Cote Rotie La Viaillere Cote Brune is fabulous. Rostaing aged it in new oak casks (the larger demi-muids, rather than the normal 55-gallon barrique). Made from 80-year old vines, this wine exhibits the animal, meaty, earthy side of Cote Rotie. The nearly black color is followed by huge aromas of soy sauce, smoked game, and black-raspberries intertwined with scents of toasty new oak. Full-bodied, tannic, and loaded with extract, this voluptuous, exquisite Cote Rotie should drink well for 15 or more years.
