In issue #95 I bestowed an enthusiastic rating on this producer's 1988 Morellino di Scansano Riserva. In the difficult Tuscan vintage of 1989, Le Pupille turned out a ripe Sangiovese-based wine (with some Alicante added). The 1989 Morellino di Scansano Riserva reveals sweet, expansive, ripe fruit, light tannin, and a medium-bodied, spicy, supple finish. I have found few 1989 Tuscan wines that are so well-balanced. Most have a tendency to be astringent and hollow, but this wine is an exception. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.
