The 2006 Barolo Cannubi flows with layers of intense, super-ripe dark cherries and plums. This is a surprisingly rich, weighty style from the Cannubi vineyard. While I admire the concentration of the fruit, much of that seems to have been achieved at the expense of site-specific expression, which is a shame. The new oak adds a layer of tannic heft I am not sure this wine really needs. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.
This is a strong set of new releases from Michele Chiarlo. I found that the Barbareschi and Baroli needed several hours of air to come together, so readers are advised to open these wines well in advance.
