Obviously Christian Canute is not shy about his pricing procedure, as reflected in the 2000 Shiraz Black Guts. Made from microscopic yields of .5 - 2 tons of fruit per acre, aged 30 months in a combination of French and American barrels, and bottled without filtration, it is an ambitious, serious Shiraz that stands out as one of this challenging vintage’s top efforts. An artisinal style is apparent in the wine’s controversial, kinky bouquet of flowers intermixed with blackberries, rhubarb, pepper, and licorice. While deep, full-bodied, and impressive, its singular style will not be enjoyed by everybody. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.
