The Domaine de Chevalier 1987 Blanc has a muffled nose at first, a touch of wet wool that almost leads you toward the Loire rather than Bordeaux! But it is well defined and generates attractive sea spray and fruits de mer notes with time. The palate is well balanced with slightly lower acidity than either the 1987 Laville Haut-Brion or 1987 Haut-Brion Blanc served alongside. It has a creamy, quite elegant texture toward the finish and though not the finest Domaine de Chevalier Blanc of the decade, it certainly continues to drink well. Tasted April 2017.

1987 is a terribly underrated vintage for white Graves. This wine has more depth, ripeness, and complexity than either the 1989 or 1986, the two vintages that most casual observers would think to be superior. The wine is pale straw in color, with an evolved, honeyed, herb-, mineral-, and orange-scented bouquet. This medium-bodied, surprisingly soft, forward Domaine de Chevalier has excellent depth, moderate acidity, and an oaky, alcoholic finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-2003. Last tasted, 11/90.
