The 2005 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett was harvested at Auslese must weights and weighs in at 9% finished alcohol, but still manages to evince some of the requisite delicacy and drinkability of the genre. “And besides,” opines Kerpen, “I have to offer my customers something as Kabinett each year.” Site-typical hints of apple and vanilla lead to a sappy, juicy palate with a subtle and alluring suggestion of creaminess and more stuffing and a riper personality than one would normally anticipate with Kabinett. A long, subtle finish displays dried apple, vanilla, and slate.
