In a year known for more disappointments, and wines that have turned out more hollow and austere than anyone expected, Durieu made one of the vintage's most impressive wines. The deep ruby/garnet-colored 1986 remains youthful. The provocative earthy, licorice, roasted meat and herb-scented nose is followed by a powerful, full-bodied, concentrated wine with plenty of muscle and extract. Despite throwing considerable sediment, the wine seems several years away from full maturity. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2011. Last tasted 1/96.
