The 2006 Barolo is made from the estate’s youngest vines, which means an average age of 20-35 years at this address, mostly from the village of Monforte with a touch of Barolo. Sweet, fragrant aromatics lead to an elegant, supple Barolo with a plush core of fruit supported by dusty yet elegant tannins. Spices, flowers and small red fruits come to life on the long, attractive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
Aldo Conterno is one of Piedmont’s true gentlemen. Spending a few hours with Conterno is like taking a full immersion course into the long, storied history of Piedmont and its producers, a knowledge of people, events and traditions that is quickly disappearing. Under the guidance of Conterno’s sons Giacomo, Franco and Stefano, the estate has begun to reclaim the leadership position it enjoyed before a series of underperforming years in the mid to late-1990s. Aldo Conterno defines 2006 a classic vintage. Regardless of whether it is or isn’t, Conterno’s Barolos are terrific and well worth seeking out.
